Success story

How a bursary changed one camper’s life

This story comes from a former bursary camper who later worked on staff. It shows how bursary support can make camp part of a young person’s life over many summers.

This story is shared in broad terms.

A large group of campers gathered by the waterfront at camp

From the camper

“Receiving a bursary did more than send me to camp for one summer. Camp gave me a sense of self and independence, introduced me to close friends and mentors, and gave me the chance to return year after year. I spent six summers as a camper and eight more on staff. The camp community has remained an important part of my life. When donors support a bursary, they help make confidence, belonging, leadership, and lasting relationships possible.”

Independence

Camp helped build a stronger sense of self and independence from the start.

Friends and mentors

Camp led to close friends and mentors who have remained important over many years.

Continuing involvement

What began with one bursary summer led to years as a camper, then years on staff, and ongoing ties to the camp community.

Why support mattered

What donor support made possible

After the first summer, the strongest memory was wanting to come back the next year. This story shows how bursary support can do more than make one summer possible. It can create continuity, confidence, and room for growth over time.

In this case, a bursary led to six summers as a camper and eight more on staff. That kind of sustained involvement is part of what donor support can make possible.
